Tips for Getting More Prints in Emergency Situations

More often than not, you will receive a low ink message from the ink cartridge. Without thinking twice, you may install a new cartridge and continue printing. What if the message is not as accurate as you thought? Did you know that in some instances, it is possible to reset the ink cartridge and thus get more prints? Below are a few tips from your trusted cartridge supplier on how to minimise ink wastage and to get more from your ink cartridge in emergencies.

Resetting the Cartridge in an Emergency

What if your DVR doesn’t work as well as it should? The first step is normally to reset it and only if the problem persists will you look at other solutions. The same applies to the ink cartridge. Note that the manufacturers include threshold warnings. It doesn’t mean that you immediately have to rush out and buy another cartridge, although it may be a good idea to have the new one at hand, should the ink be completely depleted.

If your budget is tight and you need to complete the print job, then resetting the ink cartridge may be a good option. With the Epson printer, you simply need to press the reset button. Note that it is a tiny button and you may have to search for it on the front or back of the printer. Take a pen or any object with a very small point, such as a paper clip, and press the button. That’s all there is to it.

In the case of an HP printer, you will have to go through a process, but this may only be needed if you really need to finish the print job before installing a new cartridge or there is no cartridge supplier near you. For the HP printer, you will need to cover the contact points on the cartridges with tape. Note that you have to cover each cartridge and place back into the print slot, and then run a test page before you go onto the next cartridge. This can be a time-consuming process. Then you have to remove the tape from all the cartridges and reinstall again. The printer will register the cartridges and will notify you that the new cartridges have been installed.

From the above, it becomes clear that resetting the ink cartridge isn’t always the best option. The best way to really save is to buy cartridges from a supplier that offers exceptionally good prices on original manufacturer cartridges and generic ones.

Printing with One Colour Missing

You have most probably been through the process of wanting to print a full-colour page, but because one colour is depleted, the print comes out in all shades, but the intended colour range. This is, of course, the result of one colour missing. In another instance, you try to print with the one colour absent, but the printer gives the message of “cannot print” because of the missing colour. Under normal circumstances, you will install your newly bought cartridge and finish the print job like a pro, but it is late at night and you don’t have the cartridge at hand.

Here’s what you do:

  • Restart the printer.
  • With the printer on, remove all the cartridges.
  • Using a lint-free dry cloth, gently wipe the contact points.
  • Insert the cartridges in their original slots.
  • Switch the printer off and unplug it from the power outlet.
  • Wait for 3 minutes.
  • Switch on the printer by plugging it into the power outlet and pushing the ON button.
  • Run a test page.

If the process doesn’t work, then you will need to open the Printer or the Printers and Faxes icon in the Control Panel, where you then right-click to select your printer. Now choose the print preferences and select the Colour option, where you can then choose to print in greyscale or only use the black cartridge. You won’t have full colour, but at least the print job will be done.

General Prolonging of the Cartridge Lifetime

If you want to get more prints from your cartridge before it runs empty, consider changing your default print settings to fast draft or economical for in-house print jobs. Only use the standard or best quality option once you have made corrections and are 100% sure that the print is what you want. Keep the bought cartridges in their sealed packets until you are ready to install and store them in a cool, dark and dry place.
